Capcom Explores Open-World and Online Concepts for Resident Evil: Requiem Before Returning to Classic Horror Roots
Capcom’s Early Experiments with Open-World and Online Features
Capcom has revealed that during the development of Resident Evil: Requiem, the team experimented with ambitious ideas such as transforming the game into an open-world experience and incorporating online multiplayer elements. These concepts were part of an early phase of development, showcasing the studio’s desire to push the franchise in new directions.
A Peek into the Cancelled Concepts
In a recent developer diary video, Koshi Nakanishi, director of Requiem, shared a brief glimpse of the earlier version of the game. Footage shows multiple protagonists engaging in intense gunfights, hinting at a more action-oriented, multiplayer-driven design. Despite the excitement around these ideas, they ultimately did not make it into the final product.
Returning to the Franchise’s Horror Roots
Capcom decided to pivot away from these experimental features to focus on what fans most cherish—survival horror and atmospheric storytelling. As a result, the final version of Resident Evil: Requiem will be a single-player, offline experience, emphasizing narrative and traditional gameplay mechanics.
Insights from Developers on the Development Process
Producer Masachika Kawata explained, “We packed a lot into this game and explored many different systems early on.” He also addressed rumors about the canceled open-world and online concepts, stating, “Although we experimented with these interesting ideas, we realized they weren’t what our fans wanted. So, we went back to the drawing board, leading to the current vision of Requiem.”
Visuals and Setting of Resident Evil: Requiem
Art Director Tomonori Takano highlighted that the game’s setting was deliberately chosen to be urban, setting it apart from recent entries like Resident Evil 7, Village, and the Resident Evil 4 Remake. While those titles took place in rural or isolated environments, Requiem will revisit Raccoon City, bringing the franchise back to its classic urban horror atmosphere.
Why Urban Environments Matter
Takano explained, “Previous titles often focused on rural areas with abundant nature. This time, we’re emphasizing an urban environment with many scenarios rooted in modern drama, including Raccoon City’s familiar streets.”
Will Fan-Favorite Characters Make an Appearance?
While the game’s setting and single-player focus are confirmed, Capcom remains coy about the presence of certain characters, particularly Leon S. Kennedy. Fans are curious whether the charismatic agent might appear alongside the announced protagonist, FBI agent Grace Ashcroft.
During the recent Capcom Spotlight 2025 broadcast, Nakanishi mentioned that Leon might not be the best fit for the horror tone of Requiem. However, he did not completely rule out his appearance, leaving fans to speculate about action-heavy moments where Leon’s skills could shine.
Community Reactions and Future Expectations
Fans eagerly await more details as Capcom continues to tease the game’s gameplay and character roster. The studio’s decision to steer away from open-world and online elements demonstrates their commitment to delivering a pure horror experience rooted in the franchise’s roots.
