Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Enters Pre-Production Stage with Estimated Release Date

Cyberpunk 2 Enters Pre-Production: What We Know So Far

The highly anticipated sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, now officially titled Cyberpunk 2, has moved into the pre-production phase, marking a significant milestone in its development. Previously known under the working title Project Orion, CD Projekt RED announced the new name and revealed that the conceptual development phase concluded just a few weeks ago.

Current Development Status and Team Size

At present, a relatively small core team of 96 developers is working on the game, according to the latest financial report from CD Projekt. For comparison, the studio allocated over 400 developers to the fourth installment of The Witcher series, which remains their flagship project. As the game progresses, the development team is expected to expand, signaling serious commitment to the project’s future.

Estimated Timeline and Release Window

When can fans expect Cyberpunk 2 to arrive? Mikhail Novakovsky, co-head of CD Projekt, explained during an investor call that the typical development cycle from pre-production to launch usually takes between four and five years. However, he also emphasized that each project is unique, with certain variables that could influence the timeline.

Based on current estimates, a release before 2030 appears unlikely. This timing suggests that Cyberpunk 2 will be a next-generation console title, designed for the upcoming PlayStation 6 and the new Xbox Series, along with PC versions.

Expanding the Cyberpunk Universe

Following the success of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt RED established a dedicated division in the United States focused solely on developing the sequel. This strategic move aims to streamline parallel workflows and mitigate risks associated with potential delays in game production.

Upcoming Releases and Rumors

While the sequel is still in early stages, the studio is preparing to release a version of Cyberpunk 2077 optimized for the upcoming Switch 2, scheduled for launch on June 5th, coinciding with the device’s release. Additionally, a port for Mac is also in development.

Regarding Cyberpunk 2, rumors suggest the game will feature a second city, reminiscent of Chicago, expanding the universe’s scope and offering players new environments to explore.

Beyond Gaming: Expanding the Cyberpunk Universe

The Cyberpunk universe is set to grow beyond the realm of video games. Inspired by the success of the anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, developers are exploring the possibility of creating a full-length series or even a movie. Notably, the production is expected to involve creators behind acclaimed shows like True Detective and Mr. Robot, promising a high-quality expansion of the universe for fans worldwide.
