Limited Run Games Requests Nintendo to Remove Gex Trilogy from Switch 2 eShop Amid Backward Compatibility Issues

Limited Run Games Temporarily Removes Gex Trilogy from Switch 2 eShop Due to Compatibility Problems

In an unexpected move, Limited Run Games has asked Nintendo to pull Gex Trilogy from the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop. This decision comes as the publisher awaits a necessary firmware patch to resolve ongoing backward compatibility issues affecting the game on the new console.

Delay in Firmware Update and Its Impact

According to a statement shared on social media, Limited Run Games explained that the delay in releasing a fix is primarily due to recent approval setbacks, which they linked to yesterday’s US public holiday. As a result, the publisher has instructed Nintendo to temporarily remove Gex Trilogy from the digital storefront until the compatibility problem is addressed.

Challenges with Backward Compatibility on Switch 2

Since the launch of Nintendo Switch 2, several of Limited Run’s titles, originally designed for the first-generation Switch, have faced compatibility challenges. Although a recent firmware update has improved performance for most of these games, Gex Trilogy remains affected by lingering issues. The publisher has been working on a dedicated patch to fix these problems, but it is still awaiting approval to go live.

Upcoming Patch and Expected Resolution

Limited Run Games shared that they submitted their own patch last week to ensure Gex Trilogy functions correctly on Switch 2. However, due to the Juneteenth holiday, the approval process has been delayed, and they now anticipate that the patch will be released early next week. Meanwhile, they have asked Nintendo to remove the game from the eShop to prevent customer confusion or frustration.

Other Titles Running Smoothly on Switch 2

Despite these setbacks, Limited Run has advised players to check the status of their other titles, many of which are reportedly performing as intended. Some of the titles that are currently functioning properly include:

  • Clock Tower: Rewind
  • Jurassic Park Classic Games Collection
  • Tomba! Special Edition
  • River City Girls Zero
  • A Boy and his Blob Collection
  • Rocket Knight Adventures
  • Shantae
  • Bill & Ted’s Excellent Retro Collection
  • Xtreme Sports
  • Trip World DX
  • Felix the Cat
  • Rendering Ranger R-2: Rewind

About Gex Trilogy

The Gex Trilogy includes all three titles starring the wisecracking gecko: Gex, Gex: Enter the Gecko, and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. Released on June 16 across multiple platforms, including PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch (and Switch 2), Xbox Series, and previous-generation consoles, the collection revives the classic platformer series. The original Gex first launched in 1995 for the 3DO, followed by ports to the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and PC. The franchise saw sequels in the late 1990s, but no new entries have been released since, making this remaster especially exciting for fans.

Switch 2’s Market Performance

Since its debut, Nintendo Switch 2 has sold approximately 3.5 million units, marking a strong start for the console. However, sales data for third-party titles, especially those not developed by Nintendo, paint a more complex picture of the platform’s early market reception. The performance of these games varies, highlighting the ongoing challenges and opportunities for publishers entering the new hardware ecosystem.
