Ratatan: A Rhythm-Based Roguelite That Honors and Innovates on Patapon’s Legacy
Reviving a Classic with a Modern Twist
The Patapon series on the original PSP was a defining title that brought a quirky, laid-back vibe to handheld gaming. Known for pioneering a blend of rhythm and strategy, Patapon tasked players with leading a dedicated band of followers into battle, all set to the beat of their chief’s drum. After years of dormancy, the original developers have returned to create a new game that not only pays homage to the classic but also introduces a fresh roguelite element.
First Impressions from Summer Game Fest 2025
During the Summer Game Fest 2025, I had the opportunity to preview an early build of Ratatan. Playing as a new leader, I guided my resilient troops through intense skirmishes. It took several attempts to find my rhythm amidst relentless enemies, but it became clear that Ratatan aims to be more than just a nostalgic revival—it’s a bold evolution of the original concept.
Setting and Storyline: Guardians of the Land of Redo
Ratatan unfolds in the mystical land of Redo, where music influences the destiny of the tiny Cobun people. After defending their homeland from invaders, the Cobun join forces with musical guardians called Ratatan. These guardians wield instruments like trumpets, drums, and guitars to lead the Cobun on a quest to reclaim their territory and reach the legendary lands of the Everafter. Choosing from various Ratatan, each with unique abilities, players command units in battles, retake settlements, and gather power-ups to face formidable bosses.
Gameplay Dynamics: Rhythm Meets Action
Ratatan captures the rhythm and pacing of the original Patapon games but amplifies the scale and intensity of the action. The vibrant and whimsical art style comes vividly to life as battles unfold. You control the leader character, but the units follow commands issued through beats—movement, jumping, defense, and attack—matching the rhythm of the music. The challenge lies in maintaining your tempo during combat, especially when enemy attacks become unpredictable. Mastering this timing is crucial to chaining attacks, dodging projectiles, and staying alive amid chaos.
Design Philosophy: From Patapon to Action-Packed Roguelite
In an interview, game producer Saisu Sakijiri explained how Ratatan differs from Patapon. “While Patapon had RPG influences, we’re focusing on a more action-oriented experience with roguelite elements,” he said. Inspired by titles like Hollow Knight, the development team aimed to craft a rhythm-action game that emphasizes quick reflexes and decision-making, offering a fresh take for fans and newcomers alike.
Finding Your Groove in a Challenging World
Developing a sense of timing proved to be a steep learning curve for me. I often questioned whether I was rushing or dragging my commands, all while trying to anticipate enemy moves. During one encounter, I marched my units forward only to walk into a devastating counterattack. These setbacks were frustrating but also part of the learning process. Once I adjusted my rhythm, I found myself chaining attacks and dodging hazards with ease, making the gameplay both rewarding and intense.
Roguelite Mechanics and Progression
The core gameplay loop is familiar to fans of roguelites: each run involves selecting from a roster of Ratatan, each equipped with different instruments and perks. Successful stages reward players with modifiers to enhance attack power and skills, which carry over into future runs. Exploring this progression system adds depth and strategic choices, making each attempt feel fresh and engaging.
Connecting with Fans and Evolving the Experience
Since its successful Kickstarter campaign in 2023, Ratatan has received positive feedback from long-time Patapon fans. The developers acknowledge the challenge of modernizing the game while maintaining its unique charm. “We’re delighted to see players embracing the new elements, although there is a learning curve,” said the producer. “Our goal is to create a game that respects the original but also offers a fresh, more action-packed experience.”
Looking Forward
From my hands-on experience, Ratatan is shaping up to be an exhilarating yet demanding rhythm game. Its charming world, catchy flow, and innovative gameplay make it a promising successor to Patapon. If the larger structure and roguelite features come together as envisioned, it could surpass the legacy it aims to honor.
