What Makes This Drop Special?
Unlike the recent Final Fantasy crossover, which offered a full draftable set and four pre-constructed Commander decks, this Sonic-themed collection is limited to three exclusive Secret Lair releases. Secret Lair is Wizards of the Coast’s special series of limited-time card drops, featuring custom art and themes, sold directly to players rather than through random booster packs.
Featured Cards and Their Sonic Twist
The Turbo Gear drop revamps six existing Magic cards with vibrant Sonic-inspired artwork and thematic names, along with a unique token card. Notably, it includes popular Commander staples such as Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves—because Sonic’s legendary shoes deserve their own magic cards. Additionally, a legendary vehicle card, originally the Weatherlight, is reimagined as Tornado, Sonic’s classic biplane. Thanks to recent rules updates, Tornado can even serve as your Commander if you choose to build a deck around it.
Connecting Cards and Character Themes
Wizards of the Coast states that this drop is designed to complement another set focusing on Sonic’s characters. While the full details of that release haven’t been revealed yet, an example from the Turbo Gear collection hints at thematic synergy: the reimagined Reaver Cleaver, now called Knuckles’s Gloves, which can be equipped to Knuckles himself. This approach is similar to 2023’s Tomb Raider crossover, where reprinted cards seamlessly integrate with new Legendary creatures, creating a “build your own Commander deck” experience.
Availability and Pricing
The Turbo Gear Secret Lair set, along with the other two Sonic-themed drops, will be available starting July 14 at 9 a.m. PT. Fans can purchase these exclusive cards directly from the official Secret Lair website for $29.99 (non-foil) or $39.99 (foil). Due to limited quantities, these drops are expected to sell out quickly—so mark your calendar and act fast to secure your set before they’re gone.
