What’s Left Behind: Kojima’s USB Drive of Game Ideas and His Vision for the Future

Hideo Kojima’s Legacy and His Digital “Will”

Hideo Kojima, a legendary figure in the gaming industry, is renowned for his innovative approach and unconventional thinking. His groundbreaking projects have forever reshaped how we view video games—as a form of art. Fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming release of Death Stranding 2, set to debut next month and showcase his ongoing creative genius.

A Digital Testament for Future Creators

In a recent interview with Edge magazine, Kojima revealed that he has prepared a sort of “game inheritance” for his team at Kojima Productions. He entrusted them with a USB flash drive filled with his best ideas, ensuring that his team can continue creating without simply recycling his legacy. This act reflects his desire to foster genuine innovation even in his absence.

Contemplating Mortality and Artistic Continuity

The motivation behind this unusual “will” stems from thoughts about life’s unpredictability. At 61 years old, Kojima doesn’t plan to stop working, but he is acutely aware that his time for creating may be limited. His perspective was shaped by a recent bout with COVID-19, during which he faced his own mortality.

He recalls, “I never felt old, believing I could create as long as I lived. But then I got sick, and I couldn’t produce anything. People around me were dying. I faced death myself. Now I wonder: how many years do I truly have left to make games and movies? Maybe ten.”

Passing the Torch: Kojima’s Commitment to Creativity

As a result, Kojima handed over the USB drive containing his ideas to his personal assistant. His goal is to empower his team to innovate and produce original work, rather than riding on his coattails or simply preserving his legacy. The developer hasn’t disclosed how many ideas are stored on the flash drive or whether it has been backed up, leaving some questions open about the future of his creative universe.

Kojima considers Physint the “pinnacle” of his career. The game is in active development and is expected to launch sometime around 2030, following the release of Death Stranding 2.
